KEF has released a software update for its XIO soundbar that enables select wireless speakers to function as dedicated rear channels in a home theater configuration. This feature allows users to pair the XIO with compatible KEF rear speakers, specifically the LSX II, LSX II LT, or Coda W, to deliver true surround sound through physical channels rather than relying on virtual processing or acoustic reflections.
The update comes at no cost for current XIO owners but requires the purchase of a KW2 RX wireless receiver, which is priced at €179. This accessory connects to the soundbar via a 2.4 GHz wireless signal with a latency of 57 ms and supports 24-bit/48 kHz audio quality. Users then link the receiver to their rear speakers using either a 3.5 mm mini-jack or an optical cable, though the receiver itself must be powered via a USB-C connection.
Unlike many rival soundbars, which integrate wireless rear speaker support directly into their systems, KEF’s solution demands an additional purchase. While most competing brands allow users to pair wireless speakers without extra hardware, KEF’s approach forces customers to buy the KW2 RX, even if they already own compatible rear speakers. The pairing process is managed through the KEF Connect app, which walks users through connecting the components.

The new capability enhances audio immersion by placing rear channels behind the listener, eliminating the need for simulated surround effects. However, KEF’s speakers do not support Dolby Atmos height channels or side speakers, which limits vertical audio effects and wider surround sound experiences. The company has stated it has no plans to introduce a second pair of rear speakers or side channels in future updates.
KEF plans to expand compatibility with additional speaker models later this year. The LS50 Wireless II will be added to the supported lineup by December 2026, with the LS60 Wireless and LS LUXE following in 2027. For now, only the LSX II, LSX II LT, and Coda W models are compatible, and users must own both the XIO soundbar and a matching pair of rear speakers to use the feature.
This update provides existing KEF customers with a way to enhance their audio setups without investing in entirely new equipment. However, the requirement for the KW2 RX introduces an additional cost, and the absence of Atmos support or multi-channel flexibility may disappoint audiophiles seeking a complete home theater experience. The move also subtly encourages customers to purchase more KEF hardware, as the KW2 RX was previously limited to pairing with KEF subwoofers.
